Lawyer for Georgia's former defense minister says his client's bank accounts were seized illegally

TBILISI. March 11 (Interfax) - Shota Mindeli, a lawyer for Georgia's former defense minister David Kezerashvili, believes his client's bank accounts in Monaco were blocked illegally.

The bank account is an account in Monaco, where Kezerashvili kept $7.4 million, Mindeli told reporters in the Tbilisi City Court following a hearing of the case involving illegal sale of smuggled alcohol, in which Kezerashvili is a suspect.

Mindeli said his client's bank account in Monaco was seized in connection with a different case, in which Kezerashvili is not a suspect.

The lawyer said he currently has no documents associated with the seizure of the accounts and will react as soon as he becomes familiar with all details.

Kezerashvili, former defense minister of Georgia, who is charged with corruption, now lives in France. He was previously detained at the request of the Georgian law enforcement agencies, but was later released on bail. A French court declined to extradite him to Georgia.

Kezerashvili says he is persecuted in Georgia for political reasons.
