Talks of Lavrov, Kerry begin in London

LONDON. March 14 (Interfax) - A difficult situation has emerged recently, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at the beginning of the meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry have on Friday.

"I am satisfied that we are able to meet today - the situation is difficult and many events have occurred. We will see what can be done," Lavrov said.

The meeting of Lavrov and Kerry is being held ahead of the referendum in Crimea, which has two questions - joining Russia and expanding the powers of autonomy.

The G7 leaders said they urged Russia not to support holding the referendum on the status of Crimea and they would not recognize the results of the referendum in any case.

Kerry said on March 13 that he would meet with Lavrov upon the order of U.S. President Barack Obama in order to deescalate the situation in Ukraine.

Kerry has given Lavrov a document containing proposals on resolving the situation in Ukraine. Moscow did not accept it. According to Lavrov, the United States allegedly assumes a conflict is existing between Moscow and Kyiv and proposes accepting the current situation in Ukraine with the changes of authorities as a done deal.
