Two militants killed in Dagestan

MOSCOW. March 19 (Interfax) - The National Anti-Terrorism Committee has reported the killing of two militants, one of them a member of the Gimri ring, in Dagestan.

A report posted on the committee website on Wednesday said a group of unknown people was tracked in a highland forest in Dagestan's Gumbet district early in the morning on March 17 in the course of reconnaissance and ambush operations supervised by the Operative Staff."

"[The militants] opened gunfire on the police who tried to detain them. The fire was returned and two militants were killed. One of them has been tentatively identified as federally wanted Valimagomed Sheikhov, born in 1977, an active member of the Gimri ring," the report said.

A dugout for seven persons was found near the clash scene. The police seized two submachine guns, five grenades, large quantities of ammunition, medicines, foods, and military gear.

There were no civilian or police casualties, the committee said.
