Nazarbayev wants intl instruments created to ensure global nuclear security

ASTANA. March 26 (Interfax) - Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev spoke again about the importance of strengthening global nuclear security at a nuclear security summit in The Hague.

A huge stock of nuclear materials is kept in the world, which are used in making weapons and in other military-technology spheres, the presidential press service said in a statement on Tuesday.

"International instruments must be developed for ensuring the security of nuclear materials which remain outside the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons. I am convinced that this will help solve the problem of strengthening global nuclear security in a comprehensive way," Nazarbayev said, according to the presidential press service.

Nazarbayev also spoke about his vision of the forum's future.

"I hope that in the face of present-day challenges and threats most members of the world community will favor further work after 2016. Kazakhstan would be ready to support such an idea. I propose holding summits at an interval of 4-5 years," he said.

This work must be continued for many reasons, he said. One of them is that the world is experiencing a renaissance of nuclear power engineering, he said.

"This process may increase the risks connected with sensitive technologies and materials, and aggravate the menace of nuclear terrorism. In such a complicated setting the political pace set at the previous summits should be maintained," the Kazakh president said.

Nazarbayev also said that the goals and tasks proposed at the previous summits have not been achieved in full.

Therefore, the national legislations should be perfected and the key multilateral instruments used in the nuclear security area must be universally used, he said.
