New coalition formed in Kyrgyz parliament

BISHKEK. March 31 (Interfax) - Leaders from three factions in the Kyrgyz parliament formed a new coalition on Monday, the legislative chamber press office told Interfax.

The new coalition of the parliamentary majority For Enhancing Statehood includes factions from the Social Democratic Party, Ar-Namys (Dignity) and Ata-Meken (Fatherland) parties.

The Social Democratic Party faction was the one to form the new coalition. The new coalition is a complete copy of the alliance, which fell apart on March 18, in terms of content.

"Leader of the Social Democrats, Chynybay Tursybekov, proposed all five factions to join the coalition but the Ata-Jurt and Republic factions have remained in opposition as before," the press office said.

The new coalition is headed by Felix Kulov, a well-known politician in Kyrgyzstan and leader of the pro-government faction Ar-Namys, a Kyrgyz parliament representative told Interfax on Monday.

Kulov has headed the coalition in accordance with the coalition agreement signed by faction leaders of the Social Democratic Party, Ar-Namys and Ata-Meken, the representative said.

It is expected that the coalition will nominate acting First Deputy Prime Minister Joomart Otorbaev as the new prime minister.

The vote for prime minister and new cabinet is expected to take place on April 2.

Otorbaev said at meetings with faction representatives that if he would be approved by the parliament, he had no intention to change the current government structure and no plans to drastically change the cabinet of ministers.

The Kyrgyz parliament has 120 deputy mandates and the new coalition For Enhancing Statehood will hold 69 mandates.
