37 Russian sappers given accreditation for Serbia mine-clearing effort

MOSCOW. April 1 (Interfax-AVN) - Sappers of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry have been granted accreditation by the Russian-Serbian humanitarian center permitting them to join a mine-clearing operation in Serbia, ministry spokesman Alexander Drobyshevsky told Interfax.

"The accreditation of a unit of Emergency Situations Ministry sappers planning to take part in a mine-clearing operation on the territory of Serbia has been finalized in the Russian-Serbian humanitarian center," he said.

Russia's specialists - 37 explosives experts from the 294th High-Risk Operations Center Leader and the 179th Rescue Center - will work near the Serbian town of Paracin, Drobyshevsky said.

Specialists of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry have been conducting mine-clearing operations in Serbia as part of bilateral humanitarian contacts for several years on orders issued by the Russian government.

Serbian soil is laden with unexploded ordnance and mines. Sappers of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry involved in the humanitarian mine-clearing operation in Serbia have found different explosives items, including air bombs, grenades, mortar bombs, artillery projectiles, and even ammunition dating back to World War II.
