Kazakhstan starts military draft campaign

ASTANA. April 1 (Interfax-AVN) - Kazakhstan has started a spring draft for the armed forces, the Kazakh Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Over 11,000 people have to be drafted to the armed forces and other military units during this spring draft campaign, it said.

The Defense Ministry is to draft about 3,000 recruits to the armed forces, and the rest will serve in the Interior Ministry's Interior Forces, the National Security Committee's Border Service, the Republican Guard, and the Emergency Situations Ministry.

The draftees had been previously interviewed personally to optimize the manning of the armed forces and other military units.

"This year, the military units will be manned only based on the exterritorial principle. Professions obtained by the draftees before the draft will be taken into account in their distribution to military units," it said.

The spring draft campaign will last until June 27.
