World Jewish Congress alarmed by rise of nationalists in Ukraine

MOSCOW. April 1 (Interfax) - The World Jewish Congress is alarmed by problems ethnic minorities are facing in Ukraine.

"The recent political events have created a complicated situation, breeding the feeling of danger among Jews and people of other religious and ethnic groups in Ukraine," the World Jewish Congress said in a resolution, passed at its Executive Committee's meeting in Paris on Tuesday.

A copy of the resolution is available to Interfax.

The resolution says that the Ukrainian authorities must guarantee the security of the Jews and other ethnic groups.

It also says that, the ultra-nationalist party Svoboda is represented in the new Ukrainian government, while other extremist groups played an important role in the recent protests.

The Russian delegation to the meeting was led by Russian Jewish Congress President and World Jewish Congress Vice President Yury Kanner.

According to initial plans, the meeting was to have been held in Kyiv, not in Paris. The World Jewish Congress is a major international Jewish organization uniting Jewish communities in more than 100 countries.
