Northern Fleet sailors hold air defense drills in Mediterranean Sea

SEVERODVINSK. April 1 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia's Northern Fleet (NF) ships held air defense drills in the Mediterranean Sea, which included missile and artillery firing at simulated aerial targets, NF spokesman 1st captain Vadim Serga told Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.

"The exercise involved the crews of the heavy aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and the large anti-submarine warfare (ASW) ship Admiral Levchenko. The crew of the Admiral Kuznetsov fired Kinzhal air defense missile systems and the AK-630 close-in weapon system. The simulated aerial targets were also successfully destroyed by the teams firing Kortik air defense missile and artillery weapon systems and the Admiral Levchenko gun mounted AK-100," Serga said.

In the course of practicing interaction in executing joint tasks, the crews conducted a maneuver involving passive electronic jamming for dodging anti-ship missiles, the spokesman said.

In addition to the air defense exercise, the NF sailors held a number of on-board drills to train in damage control, maneuvering in limited-visibility and intense navigation conditions, and organizing an internal daily routine.

The carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and the ASW ship Admiral Levchenko are now on their way to the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea for resupply.
