U.S. bank's actions with respect to Russian embassy in Astana could prompt retaliation - ministry

MOSCOW. April 2 (Interfax) - The decision by J.P. Morgan Chase to block the Russian Astana-based embassy transfer to the insurance company Sogaz under the pretext of anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the U.S. in response to Crimea's reunification with Russia is "absolutely unacceptable, illegal and ludicrous," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Tuesday.

"If the U.S. financial structure was thus expecting to 'distinguish itself' by earning points before the White House, then it clearly overdid it," Lukashevich said in a commentary.

"Washington must realize: any hostile actions against the Russian diplomatic mission not only constitute a gross breach of international law, but could also lead to retaliatory measures that will inevitably affect the work of the U.S. Embassy and Consulates General in Russia," the spokesman said.

"In this sense J.P. Morgan Chase rendered a disservice to the U.S. administration," the diplomat said.
