MINSK. April 2 (Interfax) - The situation on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border is stable, although Belarus has taken some steps to tighten control of the area adjacent to the border, Belarusian State Border Committee Chairman Leonid Maltsev said.
"The situation at the border is stable, normal, and controllable," Maltsev told journalists on Wednesday.
"If someone saw armored personnel carriers and tanks near the Ukrainian border, they saw them in their dreams," he said.
"Control of the border area has been tightened, including by the Interior Forces," he said.
"The checkpoints on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border are working as usual, and they haven't been closed even for a second," he said.
"The passenger flow through the Belarusian-Ukrainian border has lowered as of late, and the transport flow has lowered as well," Maltsev said. "Certainly, there have been individual instances of border violations, but in general the situation is stable and normal," he said.
The demarcation of the Belarusian-Ukrainian section of the border is continuing now, Maltsev said. "This work was started last fall. The first post was installed then. Our border is 1,084 kilometers long, and the demarcation work will last for about 7-10 years," he said.
"We have to do a huge amount of work to this end. It is proceeding in line with plans, in a routine manner, and there have been and will be no stops in it," he said.
Maltsev said he had met recently with Head of the European Union Delegation to Belarus Maira Mora, who told him that documents were being drawn up concerning the EU's assistance in demarcating the Belarusian-Ukrainian border.
