MOSCOW. April 16 (Interfax) - Special services have detained a local resident in Chechnya, who fought in Syria as a mercenary, a law enforcement source told Interfax on Tuesday.
According to the information from the source, the local resident was detained on April 14 in the village of Gekhi of Chechnya's Urus-Martanovsky District on suspicion of being a mercenary.
In accordance with the information from the law enforcement authorities, the man fought on the side of the Syrian opposition from spring 2013 until the end of the year.
The man is facing criminal prosecution under the Russian Criminal Code Article 359 (mercenary activities) and up to seven years in prison.
