MOSCOW. April 17 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian 58th Army Commander Maj. Gen. Andrei Gurulev will assess the combat readiness of the Southern Military District's motorized rifle brigade based in Chechnya, the Southern Military District said in a press release, seen by Interfax-AVN on Thursday.
"Commander of the 58th Army Maj. Gen. Gurulev is supervising command-and-staff exercises of a motorized rifle brigade as part of a surprise inspection of Southern Military District troops in the Chechen Republic. The maneuvers involve more than 500 soldiers and over 100 units of military hardware," it said.
During the drills, the personnel of the motorized rifle brigade were put on high alert and then headed to the Gvardeyets training range in Chechnya's Shali district, according to the press release.
"Under the scenario of the exercises, the military unit was ordered to surround and neutralize an imaginary illegal armed group involved in a simulated internal conflict," it said.
