All main military infrastructure facilities to be built at Iturup, Kurils by 2016 - Defense Ministry

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. April 18 (Interfax-AVN) - An army corps department has been established in the framework of developing military infrastructure at the Pacific coast and island area in eastern Russia, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"Today one of the main tasks among other things is developing military infrastructure at the Pacific coast and island areas in Russia's east. An army corps department has been established at the Sakhalin operation center in order to create forces under a single management structure," Commander of the Eastern Military District, Colonel General Sergei Surovkin said at a district military council meeting held in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on Friday.

"All decisions on the construction of fundamental military towns on the islands of Iturup and Kunashor have been made and approved, while experts of the federal agency Spetsstroy Rossii has conducted engineering, geodesic and environmental exploration," he said.

"All main facilities - and they are over 150 of them - will be built by 2016. These are modern absolutely self-sustainable military towns with developed social infrastructure. Besides military facilities construction of residential houses, socially important, cultural, leisure and sports facilities is foreseen," Surovkin said.
