Japan to issue Ukraine $1.5 bln loan

KYIV. April 18 (Interfax) - Japan will issue Ukraine a loan of $1.5 billion to carry out a number of programs, including the $1.1 billion modernization of the Bortnychi aeration station in Kyiv, the press service of Ukraine's Ministry of Regional Development, Construction, and Communal Living said in a statement.

Japan's ambassador to Ukraine, Toichi Sakata, said this during a meeting with Vladimir Groysman, who is Ukraine's deputy prime minister and minister of regional development, construction, and communal living.

"Considering the situation in the country, the Japanese government has decided to lend aid totaling up to 150 billion Japanese yen [around $1.5 billion] to carry out a number of programs," Sakata said.

Groysman said he was hopeful the Ukrainian government would confirm the draft documentation soon for the reconstruction of the Bortnychi aeration station.

The project on the comprehensive reconstruction of the Bortnychi aeration station was drawn up by the ministry jointly with Kyiv City Administration. The project will last eight years and cost a total of 10.47 billion hryvnia.

The head of Kyiv's city administration, Vladimir Bondarenko, has said Japanese investors were prepared to issue a $10 billion loan to Kyiv with 40 year maturity and 0.1% p.a. to for the plant's reconstruction.

The exchange rate on April 17 was 11.252078 hryvnia/$1.
