Bashar al-Assad files bid to run for Syrian presidency (Part 2)

DUBAI. April 28 (Interfax) - Syria's incumbent President Bashar al-Assad has put forward his candidacy for the presidential office, according to the Syrian state television station.

"Bashar al-Assad has become the seventh candidate for the post of the Syrian president," according to the report.

Assad's nomination was announced on Monday by Syrian parliamentary speaker Mohammad al-Laham, according to the television station.

Earlier six candidates filed documents for participation in the election. The Syrian presidential election is due on June 3.
