ODESSA. May 5 (Interfax) - Forty-six people were killed during mass disturbances in Odessa last Friday, Odessa regional prosecutor Ihor Borshulyak told a press conference on Saturday.
Earlier reports said 42 were killed.
Law enforcers have launched several inquiries, including into police professional negligence, the prosecutor said.
A total of 144 people have been arrested as part of the criminal inquiries.
By 9 a.m. on May 3, 214 people had sought aid in local hospitals, according to the Odessa City Council. Of this number, 88 have been hospitalized, including a 17-year-old boy.
A fire in the Odessa House of Trade Unions, which led to multiple human casualties, started as a result of clashes between Maidan opponents and supporters of a unitary Ukraine. Eyewitnesses said the building caught fire after right-wing radical supporters threw Molotov cocktails.
Earlier the acting chief of the Ukrainian presidential administration, Serhiy Pashinksiy, called the Odessa events a provocation by Russian intelligence services.
