MOSCOW. May 15 (Interfax) - An official representative of the European Union in Moscow attended the Victory Parade in Red Square on May 9 and the respect of Brussels for the memory of those who died in the war should not be doubted, the Delegation of the EU to Moscow has stated.
The European Union was not absent from the May 9 parade, press secretary of the delegation Soren Liborius told Interfax on Wednesday. Charge d'affairs Sven-Olov Carlsson was present as the acting head of the delegation, he said.
Liborius said that the diplomatic code implies this very procedure. He said that head of the delegation Vygaudas Usackas was absent from Russia at the time as he was on a business trip.
Nobody should have any doubts about the EU cherishing the memory of those killed in the war, the press secretary said. For this reason ambassador Usackas before his business trip paid tribute to their memory by placing a wreath in Alexandrovsky Garden, the diplomat said adding that information about the event can be found on the official account of the delegation on Facebook.
Earlier Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the absence of the EU ambassador to Russia from the May 9 parade was a political gesture.
