Arrests of journalists in Ukraine are major violation of freedom of press - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. May 19 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Ministry commissioner on human rights, democracy, and supremacy of law Konstantin Dolgov has called on the Kyiv administration to stop illegal arrests of journalists.

"Illegal arrests of journalists by the de facto administration of Ukraine should stop. It's a major violation of freedom of the press," Dolgov said on Twitter on Monday.

The Ukrainian military detained journalists from the Russian television channel LifeNews in Kramatorsk on May 18. The administration of the television channel asked the Russian Foreign Ministry to assist in releasing the journalists.

In a recent phone conversation with Chairperson-in-Office and Swiss President Didier Burkhalter, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov asked him to urgently use all capabilities of the OSCE for immediate release of the Russian journalists detained by the Ukrainian authorities in the Donetsk region.

Burkhalter promised to begin working on this issue immediately, the Russian Foreign Ministry told Interfax.
