Russian, Abkhaz parliaments intend to pay special attention to security, defense issues over Georgia, NATO plans

MOSCOW. May 23 (Interfax) - Russian senators intend to meet with Abkhaz colleagues in Moscow in June, Russian Upper Chamber defense and security committee head Viktor Ozerov - who has just returned from Abkhazia where the Russian delegation headed by presidential aide Vladislav Surkov went - told reporters.

"We have held a series of meetings with Abkhaz parliamentarians and have discussed a wide range of issues on further cooperation in harmonizing legislations of the two countries. We have agreed that in June our Abkhaz colleagues will come to Moscow and we will hold a meeting of the committee for cooperation between the parliaments of Abkhazia and the Russian Federal Assembly," Ozerov said.

Special attention will be paid to security and defense issues and social and economic development in legislation harmonization, he said.

"Amid the statement of the Georgian authorities on the country joining the Euro-Atlantic structures and the proposal of the Georgian authorities to place NATO subdivisions in the country, we need to pay special attention to security and defense issues," Ozerov said.

Thus, it is necessary to work out and synchronize the two countries' legislations, which will contribute to enhancing the union between Russia and Abkhazia and to expanding the legal basis for military and political integration between the two countries, he said.
