Ukrainian army representative blames militia for shooting in Rubezhnoye outside Luhansk

KYIV. May 28 (Interfax) - The roadblocks of the Ukrainian army mechanized brigade in a private residential block in the town of Rubezhnoye outside the city of Luhansk came under fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning, security operation spokesman Vladislav Seleznyov said.

"Mortars and automatic grenade launchers were fired at the town's residential blocks for an hour and a half. The militants are thus trying to persuade the local population that the Ukrainian troops are using weapons against the people," Seleznyov wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

He maintained that the Ukrainian troops "under no circumstances open fire against residential blocks" - that is what "terrorists and their abettors" do. He said the shooting in Rubezhnoye aimed to discredit the Ukrainian military.

"The ATO (antiterrorist operation) leadership is urging local residents once again not to yield to provocations," Seleznyov wrote, adding that the forces did not suffer any losses during the Rubezhnoye attack.

Militiamen from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic told Interfax in the early hours of Wednesday morning that the Ukrainian government forces had launched an artillery attack against their positions in the town of Rubezhnoye.
