Russia adds reference to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity to its UNSC draft resolution - envoy

NEW YORK (UN). June 17 (Interfax) - Russia has submitted an adjusted draft resolution to the UN Security Council after including references reaffirming Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity in it at Western countries' request, Moscow's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin has said.

"We have incorporated a number of wishes by the Council members for reference to international law, (…) references to some fundamental principles of international law like sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity," Churkin told reporters after a UN Security Council meeting that addressed the Ukrainian issues.

UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos, who was invited to this session, also believes that there is a need to take political steps to sort out this situation, he said.

According to Western media reports, Amos warned that "in the absence of a political settlement, we could face a humanitarian crisis" in Ukraine.

Western media described this statement as recognition that the current situation in Ukraine "is not yet a humanitarian crisis."

Churkin also said he was puzzled that UN Secretary of State Ban Ki-moon had not condemned the latest attack on the Russian Embassy building in Kyiv.

"I'm actually a little bit surprised that the Secretary-General did not make that statement I hope it was simply because the Secretary-General was travelling," the Russian envoy said.

Churkin also commented on insulting remarks made by Ukraine's acting foreign minister with regard to the Russian president. "As to Mr. [Andriy] Deshchytsia - he does not exist for us anymore. Anyway, his only function was to translate American instructions into Ukrainian. So it's not much of a loss…" Churkin said.
