Beijing condemns attack on Russian embassy in Kyiv

BEIJING. June 17 (Interfax) - The Chinese authorities on Monday condemned the attack on the Russian Embassy in Ukraine.

"China condemns any act of taking over embassies and consular departments. Under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and other relevant international laws, the safety of diplomatic missions and their staff must be properly ensured," said a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, commenting on the situation in Ukraine.

On June 14 several thousand people gathered outside the Russian Embassy in Kyiv to demand that Russian authorities stop meddling in Ukrainian affairs and their diplomats leave the country.

The protestors also demanded that the Ukrainian government sever diplomatic ties with Russia.

Later in the evening the demonstrators tried to break into the embassy's building. They overturned several cars with diplomatic license plates and pelted the embassy building with eggs, firecrackers and plastic bags containing Brilliant Green.
