KYIV. June 25 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had a telephone conversation with Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland to inform him of the destruction of a military helicopter and the death of nine servicemen it carried and attacks on Ukrainian military checkpoints, the presidential press service said.
"President Putin's statement calling on the Federation Council to revoke its permission to use Russian forces on Ukrainian territory is the first and so far the only positive signal from Russia," Poroshenko said.
Jagland assured Poroshenko that he would apply every effort to help Ukraine defend its territorial integrity, the press service said.
Poroshenko and Jagland agreed to continue their conversation at a meeting on the sidelines of a PACE session in Strasbourg on June 26.
Poroshenko congratulated Jagland on his reelection as Council of Europe secretary general and expressed the hope that, under Jagland's leadership, the Council of Europe would continue supporting Ukraine on its way toward the European community.
