Russia ready for counterterrorism cooperation with U.S., matter depends on Washington - Lavrov

MOSCOW. June 27 (Interfax) - Russia is interested in resuming counterterrorism cooperation with the United States in Iraq, which was frozen in 2013, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"We are interested in general in the counterterrorism fight not becoming hostage of some political bias or whims, it should be held regardless of anything, same as, terrorism can not be justified with anything," Lavrov said at a news conference in Moscow on Friday.

"We are ready for this and the matter depends on our U.S. colleagues," he said.

"A quite efficient bilateral mechanism existed with the Americans and it united different agencies involved in counterterrorism fights," the minister said.

"This mechanism was frozen by our U.S. colleagues last year and now we feel clearly their interest to set aside topics not related to the matter and to resume our close cooperation in counterterrorism affairs," Lavrov said.
