No consensus in UN SC on recognizing Islamic State in Iraq and Levant as terrorist organization - Lavrov

MOSCOW. June 27 (Interfax) - Not all members of the UN Security Council are ready to recognize the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) group as a terrorist organization, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"As to declaring the ISIS or any other group a terrorist organization, consensus in the Security Council is needed for this. Not everyone in the Security Council is ready for this for now," Lavrov said at a news conference in Moscow.

According to Lavrov, "sometimes the most evident things take a long time in the Security Council."

"In particular, Doku Umarov, even after he was included on the U.S. terrorist list, was not in the Security Council list because the very U.S. considered some legal aspects of this situation for a long time but then the decision was made eventually," Lavrov said.

It is hoped that international community will show single standards in regard to structures preaching terrorist goals and terrorist methods, the minister said.
