"Naval derby" to be held at Baltic Fleet training ground

KALININGRAD. June 30 (Interfax-AVN) - BTR-82A armored vehicle crews from the Russian Navy's Coast Guard will compete in a combat skills competition at the Baltic Fleet training range Khmelyovka, the press service of the Baltic Fleet has reported.

The competition, billed "Naval Derby" will have two stages and last from July 7 to 11.

"The Baltic Naval Derby will start from individual races in order to define the rating of each team. The 11-12 kilometer-long strip will have start and waiting areas, a finish line, the high-speed stretch, a firing range and various obstacles. Each armored vehicle is to make two laps.

Then a relay race will be held to define the winning team. Each team will use one BTR-82 with crews replacing one another. A crew is to make one circle and hit all targets on its way. The crews will also have to overcome mine barriers, slopes and hills, and perform a "snake" maneuver without touching the spacers.

Over 20 armored vehicles will be used and more than 50 servicemen will form 17 crews to represent the Northern, Baltic, Pacific and Black Sea fleets, and the Caspian flotilla.

The Baltic "naval derby" is based on the goals, tasks and traditions of the tank biathlon competition. It will also cover the main aspects of the personnel's combat training for armored vehicle crews.
