Suspected militia helpers getting arrested in Slovyansk - local resident

DONETSK, Ukraine. July 8 (Interfax) - Government security forces posted outside Slovyansk are only letting local residents into and out of the city, and arrests of suspected militia helpers were going on, a man living in Slovyansk said on Monday evening.

Only people who have Slovyansk stated as their place of residents in their papers are let in or out, the man told Interfax. "Checks are going on. People are getting arrested on suspicion of helping the militia," he said.

Though principal militia forces had left Slovyansk, there were still battles in various places on its outskirts on Monday, the man said. "There were exchanges of fire time and again at night and in the morning, and several explosions could be heard as well," he said.

There was still no water or electricity supply in Slovyansk on Monday evening. Food aid was being handed out on city streets.
