Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad rgn to neutralize NATO base in Poland - expert

MOSCOW. July 24 (Interfax-AVN) - Iskander-M tactical ballistic missile systems in the Kaliningrad region will neutralize the threats created by the NATO plans to deploy a major base in Szczecin, Poland, a Russian military expert told Interfax-AVN on Thursday.

"The NATO base in Szczecin (western Poland) is an entirely Polish problem. This base will be within reach of Iskander-M tactical ballistic missile systems. If there is a NATO base in Szczecin, then Iskander systems will unavoidably be deployed in the Kaliningrad region," he said.

"Iskander missiles can reach the new target within several minutes," he added.

The Iskander-M system, a product of NPO High Precision Weapons Holding, has a high firing capacity. It can destroy targets at a range of 500 kilometers (the Iskander-E export modification destroys targets at up to 290 kilometers) and fires at two targets with an interval of one minute. The missile is guided until it reaches the target, which makes it hard to predict its trajectory.

The Iskander-M system consists of a launcher, a loader, a routine maintenance vehicle, a command vehicle, an information point, a set of arsenal equipment and training devices.
