Lavrov accuses UK of censorship

MOSCOW July 28 (Interfax) - Russia will never impose restrictions on the British media and is hoping that the UK will also stop imposing such restrictions on Russian broadcasters, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

At a briefing held in Moscow on Monday, Lavrov expressed "serious concerns about the attempts made by the British regular to restrict the broadcasts by the channel Russia Today in the UK."

Lavrov also said the UK authorities have made threats to revoke Russia Today's broadcasting license before.

"I believe it's an absolutely evident manifestation of censorship," Lavrov said.

Lavrov recalled that the Russian Foreign Ministry said more than once that the viewpoint of the UK television and radio broadcasting corporation BBC "contradicts the viewpoint that we would like to defend and that is based on facts that we have."

"However, we have never even though of taking any punitive measures against the BBC or any other broadcaster on the Russian territory. I hope the authorities of the UK and any other country will not involve the media in political games by making them adjust their activities to suit the governments," Lavrov said.
