MOSCOW. Aug 8 (Interfax) - The commander of a Ukrainian National Guard unit was killed as the National Guard fought to gain control of a checkpoint outside the village of Maryanivka, Donetsk region, the militia's Novorossiya website reported on Friday.
According to the report, Maj. Volodymyr Kardabnev and soldier Maksim Kachura were killed and another seven servicemen were injured when a National Guard unit was ambushed on Thursday evening.
The spokesman for Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), Andriy Lysenko, said at a press briefing in Kyiv on Friday that 15 Ukrainian troops have been killed and another 79 have been injured as a result of fighting in the country's eastern regions over the past 24 hours.
The killed personnel include seven army servicemen and eight border guards, he said.
