Ukraine declares state of emergency in electricity market

KYIV. Aug 13 (Interfax) - Ukraine's government on Wednesday declared a state of emergency in the country's electricity market because of disruptions to coal supplies for thermal power plants, Energy Minister Yury Prodan said.

Prodan told Interfax that limits might be put on electricity exports.

The government directive introducing the state of emergency under the law "On the Electricity Industry" authorizes the curbing electricity of exports "but we will decide for how long and in what way - we'll monitor the situation and see how the [coal] depots are being filled," he said.

The production of coal in eastern Ukraine is still going on but the current military action is making its transportation difficult, Prodan said.
