Military railway personnel hold drills in Volgograd region

VOLGOGRAD. Aug 18 (Interfax-AVN) - Railway brigade servicemen of the Southern Military District will set up a pontoon bridge across the Volga River during drills, the Southern Military District press office said in a statement on Monday.

"Special drills will be held in the Volgograd region on August 18-22. Over 300 servicemen and about 50 units of special equipment are involved in the exercises," the document said.

According to information from the press office, servicemen will set up the 300-meter bridge, which is capable of holding up to 300 tonnes and ensure the crossing of a railway train and vehicle convoy. The capacity of the pontoon bridge allows an infantry brigade, including heavy arms, to cross in under an hour, the statement said.

Diving crews will examine the bottom of the river for the presence of explosive devices, clear the river bed and organize a guard for the pontoon bridge.
