MP: Russia needs new military doctrine rather than update

MOSCOW. Sept 3 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia should adopt a new military doctrine amid the latest military threats and challenges rather than update the doctrine endorsed in 2010, State Duma Defense Committee Chairman Admiral Vladimir Komoyedov told Interfax-AVN on Wednesday.

"I think we should not update the 2010 military doctrine, many provisions of which have grown obsolete or have excessively mild wordings, including those about NATO, the United States and so on," the admiral said.

"Bearing in mind the Russian Security Council's decision to begin the elaboration of proposals regarding military doctrine amendments by the end of this year, the State Duma Defense Committee will urgently discuss this pressing issue at one of its first sittings in the autumnal session in mid-September," he said.

"The global picture is changing rapidly due to the military conflicts in Ukraine, Syria and other regions, the presence of NATO and U.S. forces near the Russian borders is mounting, and we need to adopt a new edition of this strategic document," Komoyedov underscored.
