Russian servicemen in Tajikistan liquidate simulated terrorist camp

DUSHANBE. Sept 5 (Interfax-AVN) - Servicemen from the intelligence battalion of Russian military base 201 deployed in Tajikistan carried out a 140-km raid on a simulated terrorist camp, which was destroyed during drills, Central Military District spokesman, Colonel Yaroslav Roshchupkin told Interfax on Friday.

"During the march, officers, sergeants and soldiers with full military equipment, weighing 30 to 60 kg, took part in exercises locating a simulated militants camp, putting utilities and communications out of service, fighting while outnumbered by opposing forces and staging ambushes and attacks," Roshchupkin said.

According to Roshchupkin, the route included sections of varying difficulty in terms of movement, crossing ranges outside passes and traversing peaks or certain mountains.

"Moving in mountain districts was complicated by the difficulty of orienting oneself due to terrain homogeneity and thick fog," he said.

Russian military base 201 is the biggest Russian military facility located outside Russia. The base has about 6,000 servicemen accommodated at stations near Tajikistan's Dushanbe, Kurgan-Tube and Kulob. According to an agreement signed in October 2012, Base 201 will remain in Tajikistan at least until 2042.
