DUSHANBE. Oct 7 (Interfax-AVN) - Regiment-level tactical anti-terrorism exercises have begun at the 201st Russian military base in Tajikistan, Central Military District spokesman Col. Yaroslav Roshchupkin told Interfax on Tuesday.
The drill is taking place at the Lyaur training ground 30 kilometers south of Dushanbe.
"The servicemen were alerted today and started fulfilling the tasks assigned. They will practice operations to spot, trap and destroy the maneuver enemy in mountainous areas," Roshchupkin said..
He said servicemen of the motorized infantry, tank, artillery and reconnaissance units will practice defensive and offensive techniques, maneuvering, search and neutralization skills."
The drill will involve more than a thousand servicemen and about 300 pieces of military hardware.
The 201st military base is Russia's largest military facility beyond its borders. It has about 6,000 servicemen who live in garrisons near Dushanbe, Kurgan-Tyube and Kulyab. In accordance with an agreement signed in October 2012, it will remain deployed in Tajikistan until at least 2042.
