Five civilians killed, 24 injured in Donetsk on Wednesday - city council (Part 2)

KYIV. Oct 9 (Interfax) - Five civilians have been killed in Donetsk as a result of ongoing shelling, the city council said on its website

"As a result of the hostilities in Donetsk on October 8 five peaceful residents were killed and 24 sustained fragmentation wounds. The shelling of the Kuibyshevskyi and Kyivskyi districts continued the early hours of October 8," the city council said.

Besides, a residential building in Zoologicheska Street was fully destroyed after being hit by shells. Damage also has been caused to the roof and adjacent structures of a nearby house in the same street. Furthermore, private residential buildings in Chervonopartizanska Street and the house number 16 in Pyatnitsky Street have been ruined, as have the tower blocks in Kuibyshev Street. Shells also hit the building of a utilities firm's office number four at: 211a in Kuibyshev Street, as well as two shopping centers - Amstor (38 Sokolina Street) and Volna (217b Kuibyshev Street).

After the artillery shelling an emergency team from DonetskGorGaz (a local natural-gas supplier) registered damage caused to gas pipelines in the city's Kyivskyi and Kuibyshevskyi districts.

On Thursday morning residents reported hearing occasional volleys of gunfire in the Kuibyshevksyi and Kirovskyi districts.

At the same time, utilities firms and emergency teams are working, the city council said. Public road transport services (busses, trolleybuses and trams) run according to schedules, without disruptions.

For his part, Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said that one soldier had been killed and four injured in the hostilities zone in east Ukraine in the past 24 hours.

"One Ukrainian soldier has been killed and four injured in the past 24 hours," Lysenko said at a briefing in Kyiv on Thursday.
