Russia to sign agreement incorporating Kazakhstan's Balkhash radar into its missile attack warning network

MOSCOW. Oct 22 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has ordered the signing of an intergovernmental agreement with Kazakhstan on the terms of the transfer and use of Kazakhstan's Balkhash radar station within the Russian missile attack warning network.

The document has been published on the legal data portal.

"To compel the Russian Defense Ministry together with the Russian Foreign Ministry to hold negotiations with the Kazakh side and to sign the agreement on behalf of the Russian government, with the right to make minor adjustments," the resolution read.

The published draft agreement acknowledged "a special significance of the missile attack warning and space surveillance networks for the strategic stability and military security of the states."

The agreement will be valid for five years and automatically extended for three-year periods unless either side informs the other in writing about its intention to withdraw at least six months before the validity of the agreement expires.

The document says the two sides will bear expenditures for the operation of their military units deployed at the Balkhash radar station independently.
