Military base on Arctic Cape Schmidt to be populated in November - Eastern Military District commander

VLADIVOSTOK. Oct 31 (Interfax) - Army servicemen deployed on the Arctic Wrangel Island and Cape Schmidt will enjoy comfortable living and working conditions, Eastern Military District Commander Sergei Surovikin said at a Military Board meeting in Vladivostok on Friday.

"Modern autonomous modules were delivered to the Wrangel Island and Cape Schmidt in early September for building military camps. Each camp will consist of 34 modules divided into residential, utility and administrative blocs. Servicemen will live in comfortable apartments with new furniture, audio and video equipment and Internet access," Surovikin said.

The utility bloc will include a canteen, a first aid station, a sauna, a laundry room, utility rooms and a gym.

The camps will be star-shaped and servicemen will be able to move around indoors, minimizing their exposure to low temperatures.

"The residential bloc on Wrangel Island was commissioned a few days ago and the other modules have almost been assembled. We plan to populate the camp on Schmidt Cape in November," the district commander said.

Eastern Military District air defense units were put on trial duty on Wrangel Island and Schmidt Cape on October 1. Crews of radar stations delivered to the Arctic by ships of the Pacific Fleet and contractors are monitoring the airspace and can detect any existing and prospective aerospace targets at altitudes from several meters to several dozen kilometers and a distance of several hundred of kilometers.
