Russian, S. Korean diplomats call for swift resumption of six-party talks

MOSCOW. Dec 4 (Interfax) - Russia and South Korea have stressed that there is no alternative to a political and diplomatic solution to the nuclear and other problems on the Korean peninsula, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"On December 3, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov held consultations with the Republic of Korea Foreign Ministry's special representative for peace and security on the Korean peninsula, Hwan Zhun Guk, in Moscow," the ministry said on its website on Wednesday.

"The parties reaffirmed their shared understanding of the lack of any alternative to the political and diplomatic solution to the nuclear and other problems of the Korean peninsula, the need to start the practical work of building an efficient system for providing peace and security in northeastern Asia," the ministry said.

"During the exchange of views, the parties emphasized the relevance of swift resumption of six-party talks over the nuclear problem on the Korean peninsula under the principles set out in the Joint Statement by China, the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea), Russia, the Republic of Korea, the United States and Japan, dated September 19, 2005," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
