Four new radars become part of BMEWS - Russian Defense Ministry

MOSCOW. Dec 19 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Defense Ministry is taking necessary steps to ensure timely entry in service of the "Voronezh" high factory-readiness radars which form part of a ballistic missile early warning system (BMEWS), Deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov said on Friday.

"Voronezh radars in Yeniseisk, Barnaul, Irkutsk and Kaliningrad have switched into the 'Combat Operation' mode. Operating crews have taken up combat and trial duty," Commander of the Space Command Troops Maj. Gen. Oleg Maidanovich said at a meeting via video link.

"Military representatives at manufacturing facilities have approved two carrier rockets, two upper stages and one spacecraft" for the Aerospace Defense Troops in the fourth quarter of 2014, Borisov said.

"Soyuz-class carrier rockets were launched successfully and the Meridian and GLONASS-K satellites delivered to the orbit," the deputy minister said.

The results of efforts to increase the fighting capabilities of the air defense system around the city of Moscow and the industrial district were reported by the Commander of the Air Defense - Missile Defense Command Troops, Maj. Gen. Andrei Dyomin. He reported to the Supreme-commander-in-chief, President Vladimir Putin that "the 549th antiaircraft missile regiment has taken up combat duty."
