MOSCOW. Jan 19 (Interfax) - The information center of the Russian National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) has confirmed the elimination of a militant in Nalchik.
"A member of an illegal armed formation was discovered this morning by forces of the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Interior Ministry in the southwestern outskirts of Nalchik in the area of Michurinets gardening community as a result of a set of targeted operative and search efforts to foil the criminal plans of the militant underground operating in the territory of Kabardino-Balkaria," the NAC report says.
The report says that the regime of a counterterrorist operation was imposed in the area by a decision of the head of the operative headquarters of NAC for Kabardino-Balkaria. Law enforcers surrounded the area and civilians were evacuated.
"When law enforcers offered him to surrender the gunman hiding in the house responded by offering armed resistance using automatic weapons and grenades. He was neutralized in the active stage of the special effort," the report says.
The gunman has been tentatively identified. "He is a resident of Kabardino-Balkaria who was involved in hostilities in the Syrian Arab Republic as part of terrorist organizations and received training in mining and explosions. He was assigned to the North Caucasus for organizing terrorist activities by the leaders of the banned international terrorist organization Caucasus Emirate," the report says.
The report says that at the scene FSB experts in addition to firearms and big quantities of ammunition and grenades discovered a secret laboratory for making explosives, big quantities of explosives, a home-made bomb and actuating units for it. The bomb was defused on location to avoid its spontaneous detonation.
"No civilians were hurt. There are no losses among law enforcers," the report says.
All due operative and investigative efforts are conducted at the scene.
