KYIV. Jan 22 (Interfax) - Members of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Special Monitoring Mission (OSCE SMM) will try to get to the Donetsk airport to examine it and be able to provide impartial and clear information on the situation there, OSCE SMM deputy chief Alexander Hug said in reply to a question from Interfax at a press conference in Kyiv on Thursday.
As the OSCE SMM is a civilian mission, its members can get to the Donetsk airport only after receiving security guarantees, he said.
In commenting on media reports alleging that a toxic gas had been used against the Ukrainian government forces defending the airport, Hug said he could not confirm them.
The OSCE SMM said on Wednesday that it had heard testimony in hospitals and should now learn more about the situation and conduct an independent inquiry before making more definite statements on the matter, he said.
