MOSCOW. Jan 30 (Interfax) - Representatives of the Syrian opposition are calling on Russia to become a mediator in the Syrian negotiations, Samir Aita, a leader of the Syrian Democratic Forum, said.
"Both sides [the opposition and representatives of the official Damascus] have agreed on Russia's participation in this negotiation process," he told a press conference on Friday.
"We want Russia to intervene. Russia as a mediator can play an important role," he said.
The opposition activist said Russia should play a neutral role.
"The inclusion of Russia, of course, together with other countries, if they want, on a political, humanitarian and field level will be very good, and Russia will hold a neutral position," Aita said.
