Hollande, Merkel might propose freezing Donbas conflict - source

MOSCOW. Feb 5 (Interfax) - French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel might propose to Moscow and Kyiv that the conflict in eastern Ukraine be frozen, a source close to the Trilateral Contact Group for the settlement of the Ukraine crisis told Interfax.

"Hollande and Merkel are likely to propose the simplest way out of this situation, from Europe's viewpoint. It looks like their plan is based on granting Donbas so-called indefinite status, that is, Europe counts on the Transdniestria settlement scenario. In essence, this implies the freezing of the conflict," the source said.

He doubted that the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics (DPR and LPR) would agree to the proposal.

"It cannot be ruled out that this solution, if it is proposed, could cause perplexity in the LPR and DPR, as it does not answer the challenges related to formal status of these territories and status of their residents and does not eliminate the economic blockade problem," the source said.
