Artillery, tanks used in Russian exercise in South Ossetia - statement

MOSCOW. Feb 6 (Interfax-AVN) - More than 700 troops deployed at the Russian army base in South Ossetia are holding a tactical exercise, Russia's Southern Military District said on Thursday.

T-72A tanks, BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, Akatsiya self-propelled howitzers, Sani mortars, AGS-17 automatic grenade launchers, RPG shoulder-held grenade launchers, and small arms were being used in fire practice as part of the exercises, the district said in a statement made available to Interfax-AVN.

It said that altogether 200 pieces of weaponry were being used.

The statement said mechanized infantry, tank, artillery, surface-to-air missile and special forces were involved in the exercise, which was taking place at two sites - the Tarskoye and Dzartsemi training centers in North Ossetia and South Ossetia respectively.
