Middle East Quartet met in Munich

MUNICH. Feb 9 (Interfax) - The Quartet on the Middle East (Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations) had a ministerial meeting in Munich on Sunday.

The parties were expected to discuss in detail ways to resolve the current difficult situation in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Russia was represented at the meeting by its Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

It was reported earlier that the Quartet of international mediators of the Middle Eastern conflict would be meeting in Munich this Sunday in the traditional format, i.e. involving the Russian foreign minister, the U.S. secretary of state, the UN secretary general and the head of the EU diplomacy.

"The format will not be expanded. The Quartet meeting will not be attended by representatives from the Arab League, Egypt and Jordan," a source in the Russian delegation told reporters.

Earlier Russia called for a broader Quartet to stimulate the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
