Central part of Donetsk shelled, injuries reported - militia

DONETSK/MOSCOW. Feb 9 (Interfax) - Ukrainian government forces have shelled the central part of Donetsk, the headquarters of the self-proclaimed Donetsk people's republic (DPR) militia told Interfax on Saturday morning.

"Ukrainian forces have shelled the area of Baku Commissars Square and the Voroshilovsky district. There is some damage on Panfilov Avenue and Shakespeare Street. Injuries have been reported," it said.

Oleksandr Alipov, a deputy mayor of Horlivka, also said Ukrainian government forces had started massively shelling the city. "We have a war in full swing here, a cannonade; the shelling of our city started an hour ago and is still continuing," the Donetsk news agency quoted Alipov as saying.

Emergency workers have rushed to the scene of the attack to evaluate the situation, Alipov said. Preliminary reports indicate that explosives hit a private housing community in the Komsomolets neighborhood. No information on possible casualties is available at the moment, Alipov said.
