Karimov: state role in economy should be revised, living standards should be raised

TASHKENT. Feb 27 (Interfax) - Islom Karimov, candidate for the post of president of Uzbekistan from the Liberal Democratic Party and incumbent president of Uzbekistan, has met with the voters of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and the Khoresm region, the Liberal Democratic Party has reported.

The meeting was part of Karimov's election campaign.

Karimov told voters the priorities of the reforms conducted in the country are the deepening of structural reforms in the economy, increasing its competitive power through industry diversification, technical and technological production modernization, and small business development.

Karimov also reiterated the importance of revising the role of the state in the economy, further strengthening and expansion of the farmers' movement, ensuring employment and further increasing people's living standards.

According to the national media, other presidential candidates are also visiting the regions and meeting with voters.

Specifically, Narimon Umarov, a candidate from the Social Democratic Party of Uzbekistan Adolat (which translates as "Justice") has met with voters in the Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya regions and the city of Tashkent.

Khotamzhon Ketmonov, a candidate from the People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, has met with voters in the Samarkand, Bukhara, Navoi, and Jizak regions.

The presidential elections in Uzbekistan are scheduled for March 29. The election campaign began on December 26, 2014.
