Fifty warships to join Russian Navy in 2015 - commander (Part 2)

MOSCOW. March 2 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Navy development program stipulates the construction of numerous multirole surface ships and strategic and multirole nuclear-powered next generation submarines, Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov said.

"The slack period in the growth of our potential is long over. This is proven by the effective shipbuilding program which envisages the rapid construction of multirole surface ships and strategic and multirole next generation nuclear-powered submarines needed by the fleet. About 50 ships will be built for the Navy in 2015," the commander said during his trip to defense manufacturing plants in Kolomna.

"The oceanic strategy of the Russian Navy continues to develop; it is tasked to provide national interests and safe maritime economic operations in various parts of the World Ocean," he said.

"The Navy has the relevant potential for doing so, it has surface ships and nuclear-powered submarines, able accomplish the entire range of missions at any distance from their bases," the commander continued.

The construction of new ships and submarines "will be done simultaneously with the growth of infrastructure to accommodate the ships and submarines of new projects and the introduction of new methods for training crews of ships and submarines, including the prospective types," he said.

The Navy shipbuilding program for the period until 2050 has a number of primary areas, such as the development of the nuclear-powered submarine fleet, the improvement of nuclear and missile armaments, the creation of strategic submarine nuclear missile systems, the development of every component part of seaborne aviation, the provision of seaborne aircraft and battlefield illumination systems, the development of radio-electronic systems and troop control automation systems.
